Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a genetic disease affecting 1 in 500 people, is characterized by an overdeveloped heart muscle with fibers that have become disorganized. The severity of the disease varies widely, with most people experiencing few or no limitations on quality or length of their life; however, for a small minority of people, HCM is lethal. HCM is the most common identifiable cause of sudden death in young people, particularly athletes. To learn more, see Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.
