In this procedure, also known as pulmonary vein isolation (PVI), radio-frequency energy (heat) is applied to the atrial flutter trigger sites, destroying them. The high success rate of this treatment (80 percent to 90 percent at experienced medical centers) coupled with a low risk of complication makes this an appealing alternative to medication. The procedure causes little or no discomfort performed with local anesthesia and mild sedation. In some people, more than one treatment may be necessary to cure the atrial fibrillation. Most people resume normal activities after a few days.
