GERD

Prevention

Because the exact causes of GERD are not fully known, and some are anatomical in nature--therefore unavoidable--the goal is to minimize uncomfortable and harmful symptoms. The fewer and less severe the symptoms, the less likely GERD is to lead to serious complications.

To prevent or minimize symptoms:

  • Avoid lying down soon after eating.
  • Eat three hours or more before bedtime.
  • Lose weight if you are overweight.
  • Avoid certain foods, such as caffeine, carbonated drinks, chocolate, mints, high fat foods, fried foods, and tomato sauces.
  • Eat smaller meals.
  • Stop smoking.
  • Limit caffeine and alcohol use.
