Testing for hormone receptors
If pathological examination finds breast cells to be malignant, further studies are done to see if the cancer cells have receptors that bind with the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Cancer cells with such receptors are called hormone-receptor positive. Women with receptor-positive cancers are better able to respond to hormonal therapy and thus tend to have a better prognosis.
