Contact lens solution comes off the shelves

Drugstores around the country pulled a popular contact lens solution off shelves this week after concerns were raised that it could be linked to a rare but serious eye infection. The move came shortly after the Centers for Disease Control and Food and Drug Administration warned about a growing number of reports of Fusarium keratitis, an inflammation of the cornea caused by fungus that can cause vision loss. The CDC has investigated 30 of the 109 cases reported so far and found that most of those infected wore soft contact lenses and used a Bausch & Lomb ReNu solution. In response, the company has stopped U.S. shipments of ReNu with MoistureLoc, noting a disproportionate number of infections associated with that, its newest solution. The FDA advises using the solution with caution, and telling the doctor about signs of infection—sudden blurry vision, pain or redness, tearing, eye discharge, or increased light sensitivity.
