Injuries in kids under 15 spike during the summer months, resulting in more than 2.4 million visits to emergency rooms and more than 2,100 deaths each year, according to Safe Kids Worldwide, a nonprofit advocacy group based in Washington, D.C.

The good news is that the death rate has decreased by more than 40 percent over the past two decades, thanks to bike helmets, seat belts, and alarms that sound when a toddler slips into the pool.
