Childproof Your Summer: Vaccines

Keep your kids safe without spoiling summer fun:

7. Update their shots. Add vaccinations to the sleep-away camp checklist. Two years ago, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began recommending that children ages 11 to 12 get vaccinated with a new meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4), which protects against a particularly lethal form of meningitis; teens who were never vaccinated should also get the shot, because meningitis outbreaks tend to occur where people live in close quarters.

A booster shot combo of diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus is recommended for 11- and 12-year-olds who have not had a combo shot in the previous five years.
