Sleep Disorders

Often, ending the tossing and turning can be a simple fix: Cut out the after-dinner coffee and get the TV out of the bedroom. Or medications may help. Talk to others with insomnia, restless legs syndrome, sleep apnea, and more to find out what brings them rest.

Insomnia

Those who seek treatment for insomnia, the most common sleep disorder, can get relief. Much insomnia can be treated with better sleep habits. Behavioral therapy can also help, as can new drugs that make it easier for insomnia sufferers to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Restless Leg Syndrome

People with RLS experience an uncomfortable feeling in the legs, coupled with a strong compulsion to move the limbs and alleviate the symptoms. The feeling happens most often at night, during periods of rest or inactivity. Most have symptoms that are mild and can be managed with self-care and better sleep habits.

Sleep Apnea

There are two types of sleep apnea: central and obstructive. Obstructive sleep apnea, in which the airway closes off and the person wakes up, gasping, is the more common type. Untreated severe OSA is associated with a higher risk for heart disease and stroke, but once it is diagnosed, it can be treated.
