Northeast Ohio’s University Hospitals is making the difference through clinical and technological innovation. Today, University Hospitals (UH) serves the needs of patients through an integrated network of hospitals, outpatient centers and primary care physicians located throughout Northeast Ohio. Our patient care ranges from diagnosing and treating the simplest medical problems to understanding and curing the most complex illnesses, from premature infants to the most elderly patients.
At the core of our health system is University Hospitals Case Medical Center, a nationally recognized academic medical center. University Hospitals Case Medical Center is home to some of the most prestigious clinical and research centers of excellence in the nation and the world. As a tertiary-quaternary care hospital, University Hospitals Case Medical Center has some of the most renowned sub-specialists in cancer, pediatrics, women's health, orthopaedics, radiology, neurology, cardiology and cardiovascular surgery, organ transplantation, urology, and digestive diseases.
Its main campus in Cleveland’s University Circle includes the internationally celebrated UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital, ranked second in the nation by U.S. News & World Report for the care of critically ill newborns; UH MacDonald Women's Hospital, Ohio's only hospital for women; UH Ireland Cancer Center, part of the National Cancer Institute-designated Case Comprehensive Cancer Center; UH Neurological Institute, which has 15 centers of excellence; and UH Harrington-McLaughlin Heart & Vascular Institute, a leader in cardiovascular clinical research and treatment. Other UH affiliated community hospitals are UH Bedford Medical Center, UH Conneaut Medical Center, UH Geauga Medical Center, UH Geneva Medical Center and UH Richmond Medical Center. The system also includes the UH Extended Care Campus, which provides additional inpatient medical care after patients are discharged from an acute care hospital.
As the primary affiliate of Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine, University Hospitals Case Medical Center’s commitment to exceptional patient care begins with revolutionary discovery. Faculty at CWRU School of Medicine, who are also physicians and researchers at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, are at the forefront of medical research, education and innovation. CWRU School of Medicine is the largest medical research institution in Ohio and among the nation’s top medical schools for research funding from the National Institutes of Health. Many of the discoveries made by our joint faculty at CWRU School of Medicine and University Hospitals Case Medical Center provide patients here and throughout the world with the most advanced treatments options.
University Hospitals is in the midst of completing Vision 2010, a five-year $1.2 billion strategic plan, which includes building a free-standing 120-bed Cancer Hospital to house the UH Ireland Cancer Center; a Center for Emergency Medicine at UH Case Medical Center for adults and children; and a recently opened Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. Vision 2010 also includes building the UH Ahuja Medical Center, a 432,000-square-foot hospital and medical office building in Beachwood, Ohio, and outpatient health centers throughout Northeast Ohio – UH Twinsburg Health Center, UH Concord Health Center and the future UH Medina Health Center. A key part of Vision 2010 is a new state of the art Electronic Medical Record system, which is being implemented throughout the health system.
For over 122 years, University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital has been dedicated solely to the care of children. As one of the most renowned pediatric medical centers and a principal referral center for Ohio and the region, the 244-bed hospital is home to 850 pediatric specialists and 40 specialty care centers including centers of excellence in minimally invasive surgery, oncology, neonatology, neurology and endocrinology. As a teaching affiliate of CWRU School of Medicine, Rainbow trains more than 100 pediatricians annually and consistently ranks among the top children’s hospitals in the department of pediatrics for research funding.
University Hospitals Ireland Cancer Center offers patients access to more than 300 clinical trials and is one of the first sites in the country to conduct human trials of a promising new treatment for graft versus host disease, a severe complication that occurs after stem cell transplantation.
