Who We Are

The University of California, San Diego Medical Center is an internationally recognized research medical center, comprised of two teaching hospitals, a comprehensive cancer center and affiliated medical groups. With the region’s only academic hospitals, UC San Diego Medical Center is a health-care destination for patients and families seeking access to groundbreaking cancer, cardiovascular and surgical care, including more than 400 FDA-regulated clinical trials.

UC San Diego Medical Center specializes in the treatment of complex, often rare medical conditions, offering patients the focused care of a multidisciplinary team of caregivers. True experts in their fields, the hospital’s physicians and surgeons are leading researchers and clinicians who are training the next generation of health care providers-often in therapies and methods they themselves have perfected.

UC San Diego’s comprehensive health system includes UCSD Medical Center, Hillcrest, Thornton Hospital, Moores UCSD Cancer Center, and the Shiley Eye Center. In 2010, the four-story Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center will open, followed by the unveiling of a new inpatient bed tower in 2011.

Moores UCSD Cancer Center is one of the nation’s 41 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers. Its mission is to advance the prevention, treatment and cure of all cancers. The center is home to the multi-institutional NanoTumor Center which brings physicians together with experts in engineering, chemistry, physics, mathematics and biology to attack cancer using cutting-edge nanotechnology tools.

UC San Diego Health Sciences physician-scientists are faculty of either the UCSD School of Medicine or the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The School of Medicine is ranked 6th in research among public universities in the 2010 edition of U.S. News & World Report's America's Best Graduate Schools issue. Reflecting its research prowess, the school consistently ranks among the top two in the nation in federal research funding per faculty member. The School’s faculty includes nine Howard Hughes Medical Institute and seven Ludwig Institute of Cancer Research investigators.

In just four decades, UC San Diego Health Sciences has made a profound impact on healthcare, both locally and globally–translating basic laboratory findings into lifesaving medical and surgical care. From the first human trial of gene therapy for Alzheimer’s disease, to new treatments for ovarian cancer and the revolution of robotic and scarless surgery, UC San Diego continues to lead the forefront of innovation.
