Who We Are

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, a 543-bed tertiary care facility located in Norfolk, Va., is home to the area's only Level I Trauma Center and burn trauma unit. For 12 straight years, the National Research Corporation has named Sentara Norfolk General Hospital the Hampton Roads Consumers' Choice award winner. Heart, Heart Surgery and Kidney services at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital are listed among the top 50 cardiac programs in the nation in the July issue of U.S. News & World Report magazine.

In addition to a first rate cardiac program, the hospital is home to the Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance and houses dedicated facilities and specialized services including the Sentara Cancer Institute, transplant program, eICU(R), a highly advanced electronic monitoring system for intensive care patients, hospitalist program, specialized level II nursery, minimally invasive surgery techniques, neurosciences, and reconstructive surgery.

The opening of Sentara Heart Hospital in 2006 brought the region's first and only dedicated heart hospital. This exceptional facility carries on Sentara Norfolk General's tradition for cardiac excellence by consistently ranking among the nation's top 50 heart programs. At Sentara Heart Hospital, patients receive comprehensive cardiac services - from diagnostics to open heart surgery and transplants - at one location. This state of the art hospital features all-private rooms, including 112 inpatient beds and 45 pre/post procedural rooms for patients undergoing interventional cardiac procedures.

In addition, Sentara Heart Hospital houses five cardiac operating rooms designed to accommodate 2,000 cardiac surgeries a year. There are six catheterization labs for diagnostic and interventional procedures. A parking garage with 450 spaces is available to heart patients and their families.

To advance the understanding and treatment of cardiovascular disease, Sentara established a research program in 2005, called the Sentara Cardiovascular Research Institute. Uniquely qualified Registered Nurse Research Coordinators, along with the cardiac physicians, collaborate with local institutions, government agencies and biomedical companies to perform clinical research trials. Ultimately the work of the SCRI enables clinicians to improve clinical care delivery, patient outcomes and the overall health of our community.
