Who We Are
Miami Children's Hospital
Conjoined twins. Child victims of trauma. Infants with complex heart defects. Children with brain tumors or medically resistant epileptic seizures.
Thousands of children like these have received a chance for a better future thanks to the medical team at Miami Children’s Hospital (MCH), South Florida’s only freestanding pediatric hospital exclusively for children. The 289-bed non-profit facility cares for the region’s most vulnerable children, receiving thousands of referrals of complex cases from throughout Florida, South and Central America and the Caribbean. The hospital is home to the state’s top pediatric sub-specialists and also houses the region’s only freestanding state-designated pediatric trauma center.
Founded in 1950, Miami Children’s is widely recognized as one of the best children’s hospitals in the country. Several of its programs were ranked among the nation’s best by U.S. News and World Report in 2008 and 2009. The hospital has also been listed among the nation’s best pediatric hospitals by Parents magazine and is one of the largest pediatric teaching hospitals in the country.
Congenital Heart Institute
The Congenital Heart Institute at Miami Children’s Hospital and Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children treat some of the most complex cases in the world while maintaining one of the best survival rates. The program offers the most innovative, least invasive approaches to the treatment of congenital heart disease, including many first-in-the-world procedures that were pioneered by the institute’s own internationally renowned cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons. Recognized as one program at two locations, the Congenital Heart Institute provides care for children at Miami Children’s Hospital as well as at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando.
Miami Children’s Brain Institute
Miami Children’s Brain Institute receives children from throughout the world. Many families are seeking care for children with complex brain anomalies for whom they could not secure treatment elsewhere. The program is especially renowned for its work in treating patients with epilepsy who do not respond to pharmaceutical therapies. The program has pioneered brain mapping procedures that support surgeons in removing diseased tissue while preserving key functions.
Neonatal Care
Miami Children’s Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit provides care for the region’s most critically ill neonates. Because Miami Children’s does not have a birthing center, all babies admitted to the unit are referred by other neonatal units from throughout the region and state. Referring units look to MCH to support the care of newborns who are extremely premature or who have complex conditions requiring sophisticated management.
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
The hospital’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit receives referrals from throughout the state, the Carribbean, and Central and South America. It provides care for trauma victims as well as children recovering from complex surgeries, and has extensive experience in offering ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) and apheresis care.
Orthopaedic Surgery
Miami Children’s Hospital is a regional leader in pediatric orthopaedic surgery.
It is the largest provider of pediatric orthopaedic services in the region and offers specialties in pediatric spinal surgery, limb lengthening and sports medicine. The orthopaedic surgeons at Miami Children’s are active in pediatric research and have been instrumental in developing methods that are used throughout the world.
Cancer Center
Miami Children’s Cancer Center is the largest provider of pediatric cancer services in the South Florida region and has achieved Approved Cancer Program status from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. The center’s Bone Marrow Transplantation Program has attained Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapies (FACT) certification for all aspects of bone marrow transplantation.
Preventive Medicine Services
Miami Children’s is a regional leader in providing care for underserved children. The Division of Preventive Medicine offers a “Health on Wheels” medical van staffed by doctors and nurses that visits migrant camps, community centers and schools with high populations of underserved children.
Researching New Treatments
The MCH Research Institute is the only entity in Florida dedicated exclusively to pediatric research. It is a regional leader in pediatric clinical research, participating in more than 165 studies of new treatments, interventions and assessment methods that keep hope alive for families of children with chronic and critical illnesses. The hospital is also at the forefront in developing promising innovations not yet ready for clinical testing.
