Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit
Who We Are
Henry Ford Hospital is one of the country's leading specialty care, teaching and research institutions. The not-for-profit hospital has been providing outstanding medical care to metro Detroiters since it was founded in 1915 by auto pioneer Henry Ford. Today, it is the flagship of Henry Ford Health System, the second largest health care system in Michigan.
Henry Ford Hospital is a 802-bed tertiary care hospital, education, and research complex recognized for clinical excellence and innovation in the fields of cardiology and cardiovascular surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopaedics and sports medicine, organ transplants, and treatment for prostate, breast and lung cancers. Henry Ford Hospital is a Level 1 trauma center.
The Henry Ford Medical Group is one of the nation’s largest group practices, with 1,100 physicians and researchers in 40 specialties who staff Henry Ford Hospital and 27 Henry Ford ambulatory medical centers.
Henry Ford Hospital and the Henry Ford Medical Group were among the first in the country to document patient visits directly from their desktop computer via an electronic medical record. The system, known as CarePlus, offers more efficient access to patient information than the traditional paper medical record. And e-Prescribe, the electronic technology aimed at reducing medication errors and reducing prescription costs, recently reached the milestone of 6 million prescriptions filled by the Henry Ford Medical Group.
A $5 million, 12,000-square-foot simulation facility, the largest in the Midwest, recently opened at Henry Ford Hospital allowing health care professionals to practice and augment their skills using state-of-the-art simulations including computers and mannequins that simulate hundreds of different medical conditions.
More than 150 medical specialists and research scientists, including more than 80 full-time researchers, are involved in several hundred individual research projects. Our well-known research programs include stroke, hypertension, heart disease, cancer, bone and joint diseases, sleep disorders, and epidemiology of cancer and asthma/allergy.
More than $70 million in annual research funding is received from internal and outside sources, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), other governmental sources, businesses and private foundations. Henry Ford ranks in the top 6 percent of all institutions granted funding by the NIH and the U.S. Public Health Service.
Henry Ford scientists and physicians have engaged in research studies that have resulted in adoption of new treatment modalities, such as tPA for the treatment of stroke, bevacizumab for recurrent glioblastoma multiforme tumors, and beta-blockers for the treatment of heart failure.
Published studies and articles included findings from the prostate, lung, colorectal and ovarian (PLCO) cancer screening trial; results of the National Cooperative Inner-City Asthma Study, a randomized clinical trial to reduce asthma morbidity among inner-city children; final results of the Lung Screening Study, a randomized feasibility study of spiral CT versus chest X-ray screening for lung cancer; a study on the economic impact of false positive cancer screens; a look at the lack of racial differences in breast cancer survival in a managed care population; as well as results from a study that showed how exposure to pets protects young children against allergies.
Other innovations include robotic surgery for prostate cancer and the development of novel treatments for stroke and prostate cancer.
Henry Ford was one of the first health systems to join the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s (which was founded at Henry Ford) 100,000 Lives Campaign in 2004. The campaign was the first national effort to engage U.S. hospitals in a commitment to implement changes proven to improve safety and avoid preventable deaths. In addition, Henry Ford Hospital is ranked in the top 10 - among the 169 Michigan hospitals - for having the lowest mortality rates.
Henry Ford has developed innovative ways to address the social, economic and educational issues that affect the health of the metro Detroit community including:
• Institute on Multicultural Health – Studies the disparities in health care among people of color and finds solutions for getting early diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
• Community Health and Social Services (CHASS) Clinic – Provides primary care services to more than 3,500 uninsured Detroit residents every month. Henry Ford physicians staff the two clinics.
• School-Based Health Initiative – Provides students access to a health care clinic in 14 Detroit and suburban schools, including primary care, dental services, mental health and health education.
