Who We Are
Moffitt Cancer Center opened in Tampa, Fla., in 1986. The momentum to create the cancer center came from a cadre of legislators, physicians, educators and business leaders who envisioned a new era of cancer care and research in the state. Since the beginning, Moffitt has operated under one mission - to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer.
Moffitt continues to take bold steps to fulfill its mission through a program called Total Cancer Care.
Total Cancer Care is a comprehensive approach that enables researchers and caregivers to identify and meet the many needs of patients and their families - not only during the patient’s lifetime but for future generations as well. From groundbreaking research into personalized medicine... to an innovative patient internet portal... to prevention initiatives, support services and survivorship programs, Total Cancer Care follows patients and families through their cancer journey and beyond.
Research is absolutely critical to the eventual control of this disease, and an exciting aspect of Total Cancer Care is an ongoing research study pioneered right here at Moffitt.
Moffitt is spearheading one of the largest tumor tissue collection databases in the world. Our scientists are studying the unique genetic makeup of patients’ tumors to understand why each person responds to cancer therapies differently. Armed with this body of knowledge, scientists will eventually be able to develop personalized or "precise" treatments for individual patients.
Patient care at Moffitt Cancer Center is organized into programs that focus on specific types of cancer. These interdisciplinary patient care programs include;
-Blood & Marrow Transplantation
-Don & Erika Wallace Comprehensive Breast Program
-Cutaneous Oncology
