Who We Are

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) is a nationally ranked, 396-bed tertiary care academic medical center located on a 225-acre main campus in the heart of the Connecticut River Valley in Lebanon, N.H., on the state’s western border with Vermont. DHMC consists of Dartmouth Medical School, Norris Cotton Cancer Center (a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center), Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth, and the Veterans Administration Hospital in White River Junction, Vt. The Dartmouth-Hitchcock system also includes large, multi-specialty community group practices in four of the state’s largest cities and delivers a variety of specialty medical services through collaborative relationships with several other hospitals across Vermont and New Hampshire.

Comprehensive programs and centers of excellence include an interdisciplinary Spine Center, as well as heart and vascular, orthopaedic, neuroscience and other specialty services. Throughout DHMC and Dartmouth College, scientists and physicians work in partnership with volunteers from throughout our region and beyond to develop new treatments at the cutting edge of medical practice. DHMC has been a leader in publishing its Quality Reports online, providing accurate and honest data to help patients and families make informed decisions about their care.

DHMC is New Hampshire’s only verified Level I Trauma Center and is one of only three in all of northern New England. DHMC is one of only 45 centers nationwide with the Level I Trauma Center (adult and pediatric) certification from the American College of Surgeons. The Dartmouth-Hitchcock Advanced Response Team (DHART) operates two emergency medical air transport helicopters and two ground units, with a total team of about 60 that includes communications specialists, flight nurses, flight paramedics, respiratory care practitioners, EMTs, pilots, and airframe and power plant mechanics. Operating 24 hours a day and seven days a week, DHART crews transport adult, pediatric and neonatal patients to any appropriate medical facility in New England.

The Dartmouth-Hitchcock system employs more than 8,000 people – including more than 900 primary and specialty care physicians, and nearly 2,000 nurses – and serves a large population across a broad region of northern New England. Through research, education, clinical practice and community partnerships, Dartmouth-Hitchcock’s mission is to provide each person the best care, in the right place, at the right time, every time.
