Who We Are

In 1921, four renowned physicians founded Cleveland Clinic. Their vision was to integrate the highest quality patient care with advanced medical research and education.

The integration of care, research and education—the three cornerstones of our practice today—serves as the driving force behind numerous medical innovations and “world firsts” that our physicians and researchers continue to pioneer.

From the development of the “no-touch” technique to prevent the spread of cancer cells during colorectal surgery and the first coronary angiography—both in the 1950s—to the nation’s first face transplant, Cleveland Clinic physicians and scientists have remained steadfast in their quest for medical and scientific knowledge.

Today, Cleveland Clinic is one of the largest and most respected academic health centers in the world. More than 1,800 full-time physicians and scientists provide and contribute to patient care in 120 specialties and subspecialties. Cleveland Clinic is consistently ranked among the top hospitals in America by U.S. News & World Report, and our heart and heart surgery program has been ranked No. 1 since 1995.

Guided by a solid tradition of excellence, we continue to pursue scientific investigation, champion clinical training and deliver the finest health care possible to our patients.

“PATIENTS FIRST”
“Patients First” is the guiding principle of Cleveland Clinic. It declares the primacy of patient care, comfort and communication in every activity we undertake. It affirms the importance of research and education for the improvement of patient care. “Patients First” also demands a relentless focus on measurable quality. By setting standards, collecting data and analyzing results, Cleveland Clinic puts patients first through improved outcomes and better service, providing a healthier future for all.

In 2007, we restructured our practice to complement the group practice model. By combining specialties surrounding a specific organ or disease system into integrated practice units called institutes, we can better provide collaborative, patient-centered care.

WHY CHOOSE CLEVELAND CLINIC?
Patients travel to Cleveland Clinic from across the United States and from more than 80 countries around the world seeking excellence in medical care. And for good reasons:

•Experience. The role of patient volume as it relates to outcomes is well documented. Hospitals with large experience in a given procedure demonstrate excellence, and their patients experience better outcomes. Each year, Cleveland Clinic records 3 million outpatient visits and more than 50,000 hospital admissions, representing one of the busiest patient practices in the country.

•Excellence. Cleveland Clinic offers specialty care for a wide range of adult and pediatric health concerns. Our physicians demonstrate excellence in treating heart disease, cancer, digestive problems, ophthalmic conditions, muscle and bone disorders, brain and nervous system problems, and bladder and kidney disease, to name but a few.

•Cost-effective Care. Cleveland Clinic is structured as a private, nonprofit group practice, allowing us to offer patients leading-edge care in the most cost-effective manner. Cleveland Clinic has no owners or stockholders; all revenues above costs are used to enhance clinical progress, improve patient services, and finance capital projects, research and education.
