Who We Are
Children’s Medical Center Dallas is a private, not-for-profit pediatric healthcare system that devotes itself solely to caring for the complex medical needs of children. Children’s traces the origin of its mission to make life better for children to 1913, when a group of nurses organized an open-air baby clinic on the lawn of Parkland Hospital, the first permanent hospital in Dallas. The nurses recognized that children received better care when it was focused solely on the patients. Their small clinic grew into the ninth-largest pediatric healthcare provider in the country.
Today, Children’s provides more than 360,000 patients annually with care ranging from simple eye exams to specialized treatment in areas such as heart disease, hematology-oncology and cystic fibrosis. The hospital system is licensed for 483 beds and operates 10 ambulatory care sites. More than 800 medical staff members help fulfill the needs of patients and their families. Children’s Dallas is the only pediatric hospital in Texas designated as a Level I trauma center and one of only 14 in the United States. The hospital is designated as a Magnet Recognition Program through the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
The Children’s system opened a second, full-service hospital in Plano, Texas in 2008 — Children’s Medical Center at Legacy — which offers the largest suburban group of pediatric specialists in the nation. Children’s at Legacy features 36 beds, four state of the art operating rooms, 24/7 emergency services and full-service laboratory, pharmacy and imaging services.
Children’s is a national pediatric research center sanctioned by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). As the primary pediatric teaching facility for The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, the medical staff at Children’s conducts research that is instrumental in developing treatments, therapies and greater understanding of pediatric diseases. This research is nationally recognized for programs devoted to cancer, cardiothoracic, neonatology, kidney disease, infectious disease, pharmacology, sickle cell disease and psychiatry.
Many of the 50 specialty programs of the Children’s system have received national and international recognition, confirming an outstanding reputation for Children’s as one of the finest pediatric healthcare providers in the U.S.
