Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Mich.
Who We Are
Beaumont opened on January 24, 1955, as a 238-bed community hospital in Royal Oak, Mich. Today, that hospital is a 1,061-bed major academic and referral center with Level I trauma status and a Beaumont Children’s Hospital. It is partnering with Oakland University in Rochester, Mich. to establish a private medical school.
Beaumont was Michigan’s first Magnet-designated hospital for nursing excellence. The Joint Commission accredited hospital ranks No. 1 in the United States for inpatient admissions and second for its number of surgeries. It is home to the Marcia and Eugene Applebaum Surgical Learning Center, one of about 25 in the U.S. with Level 1 status from the American College of Surgeons.
The Walter & Marilyn Wolpin Comprehensive Breast Care Center is the first in Michigan to be accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, a program administered by the American College of Surgeons.
In addition to its Royal Oak hospital, Beaumont has community hospitals in Troy, Mich. with 361 beds and Grosse Pointe, Mich. with 289 beds.
91 medical and surgical specialties are represented on the Beaumont medical staff of more than 3,100 physicians.
Beaumont is a major teaching facility that has 38 accredited residency and fellowship programs with about 400 residents and fellows. Beaumont also has a nursing affiliation with Oakland University (including a top-ranked Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist School).
The Beaumont Research Institute works with 430 investigators conducting more than 925 active laboratory and clinical studies–including almost 96,000 participants–funded by government, foundation, and commercial grants. The Research Institute has an average annual operating budget topping $30 million.
Groundbreaking Beaumont research has shown:
• Heart CT (Computed Tomography) dose can be reduced by more than half with no compromise in image quality.
• Quick detection of bleeding in the brain for people on blood thinners decreases mortality.
• CT is the best way to diagnose chest pain in the emergency center.
• Radiation treatment time for breast cancer can be cut from weeks to days with comparable cancer control. Beaumont is leading a national study on this treatment time reduction.
• Angioplasty is the best treatment for heart attacks.
The Beaumont Research Institute’s BioBank uses state of the art molecular and genetic equipment and analysis for early detection and prediction of disease, leading to the development of personalized treatment plans for patients.
Beaumont is home to Safety City U.S.A., the first nonprofit injury prevention/safety education center in Michigan, that is a collaboration among the hospital and the local police and fire departments.
