Fresh fish should not smell fishy, and the FDA’s rules of thumb include cooking it thoroughly. But try telling that to any urbanite under 40 who counts sushi as a weekly staple. If you’re a fan of raw fish, try to eat fish that has been frozen, which kills off some parasites, according to the FDA. But those who are pregnant, immune-compromised, very old, very young, or with decreased stomach acid ought to stay away from uncooked fish.
