Both Sheehan and Smith said the most important safety aspect in a playground is its surface.
When the researchers went back in 2011 to reevaluate playgrounds that had failed, they found that 40 percent now received a passing grade. They also found overall improvement, with average scores going from 61 percent to 67 percent.
