Anticholinergics are contraindicated in the elderly. I am on a mission to get the word out. Sometimes multiple anticholinergics are prescribed at the same time, which can cause cognitive decline in an elderly person. I know firsthand because my mother died from injuries she suffered in a fall, her third fall after being placed on these medications (first multiple antidepressants, then antipsychotics). The medications caused adverse events which were then "diagnosed" as dementia, which then "worsened" as she was put on additional anticholinergics to treat her new "diagnoses." The family was not aware she had been put on these meds. Her meds were dispensed by a medication passer at her ALF. So, please--ask to see your parent's list of medications even if you think you know what he/she is on.

Again I agree I've witnessed it myself at approximately 7:00 p.m. they give there meds and are wheeling and or guiding them to bed and they are like zoombies its freakin sicking !!!!!!!

My Dad is being kept in a secured unit nursing home by stepmom and they are doing just that to him DRUGGING HIM I am fighting her for guardianship she is 16yrs. My Dads senior, he is 79 he hurt his back one day in Feb.2012 went to e.r. given flexirill,loritabs,and a cortizon shot I reminded my stepmom he can't tolerate narcotics tell him he can't take that but she gave them to him anyway he was in pain and wanted relief, he's already a heart patient and his REG. Dr. Had started him last yr on a dementia pill he drove and functioned very well he just lost a few words when he was talking nothing serious, we his children live in another state. Anyway it flipped my Dad out and he spent a week in the hosp. Than put in VA. N.home for temp. Rehab well 8 mos. Later stepmom,judge,guardian ad litem won't let him out he's better but still being drugged just enough to keep him mixed up Haldol,Respiradol,adavan,abiliafy,lexapro,geodon,abhr gel, plus his heart meds. Trannsene, over 8 mos. He's been given this CRAP and stepmom JUDGE, G.A.L. is condoning it my Dads going to die with this CRAP and theres nothing we can do. No one wants to listen to us or let him out because he's been married to her for 36 yrs. It's a damm shame the justice system in VA. is letting this go on. We tried telling G.A.L. and Judge Won't Listen, us kids want none of thier assets never have Dad has a will, goes to stepmom, he did not make her his P.O.A....so now we are trying to force the copy of will to be shown Dad says its my Brother, please pray with us he's right and pray the system makes her show the will. Please pass this law so other families don't have to go through what we are this is in humane!!!! My sister and brothernlaw are nurse and doc. It's a permanent effect that the PYSCO DRUGS they keep them on make them drull,there lips stick out, ect. IT'S REALLY GOING ON PEOPLE ...DO AWAY WITH THESE DRUGS PLEASE, my Daddy can't possibly speak for himself clearly enough for a doc to reavaluate him cause he's being drugged so this all equals he will be kept prisoner and they will use tax payers money to do this!! SOMEONE HELP MY DAD HAD COMMITTED NO CRIME HE WANTS OUT HOW CAN THE SYSTEM OF GATECITY,VIRGINIA DO THIS TO A U.S. CITIZEN, A VETERAN, A FATHER, A GRANDFATHER. MEDICAID IS PAYING BIGGEST PORTION AND HE DOESN'T WANT TO BE IN THERE, STEPMOM IS CHEATING THE TAX PAYERS OF DUFFIELD, VIRGINIA BY KEEPING HIM IN WHEN SOMEONE ELSE THAT TRULY NEEDS IT COULD USE IT. THE MAN HAS RIGHTS BUT WON'T HAVE AFTER DEC.11 if he has no P.O.A. PUT A STOP TO THESE DRUGS, HOW MANY INNOCENT ELDERLY PEOPLE HAVE ALREADY DIED FROM THIS ABUSE ??? YOU MIGHT AD WELL BEAT THEM UP WHAT THE HELL'S THE DIFFERENCE, THEY SIT WITH THERE HEAD BETWEEN THERE LEGS!!! WHAT A LIFE WOW I'M ASHAMED TO HAVE TO BE WRITING THIS WHERE IS OUR AMERICA GONE? This seems to be a common trend for institutions like residential homes and mental health clinics.
I find it very careless and concerning when a patient or residents mental health needs are not considered cost effective when dealing with all angles of the treatments on the level of the persons quality of life when it would be easier to prescribe large doses of mind altering doping agents for an easier and merciless approach for care.
I think the trend is most certainly a more lucrative and expendable venture for the long run for it to be a changeable practice for alternate treatments and thinking,so i would guess there would not be calls for change until a more logical and cost affective method comes into play.

Thanks for posting this vital information.The Eli Lilly company made an astounding $65 BILLION on Zyprexa that they PUSHED on the elderly and underage children (*Viva Zyprexa* Lilly sales rep slogan) with wanton disregard for the side effects

The Zyprexa antipsychotic drug,whose side effects can include weight gain and diabetes, was sold to Veterans,children in foster care, elderly in nursing homes.
*Five at Five* was the Zyprexa sales rep slogan, meaning *5mg dispensed at 5pm would keep patients quiet*.
