Lower-Dose Radioiodine Effective Against Thyroid Cancer

Michael, the worst think about the radioactive iodine is the low iodine diet you have to follow for at least a week before. I didn't have any bad side effects other than neck tenderness for a few days. I was also severly hypo, as I had a total thyroidectomy, then no synthroid until my TSH levels were high enough to do the iodine. If you go to thyca.org, there's a low iodine cookbook with great recipes. I would say look at it before you go hypo and have things on hand to eat. Good luck to you, so sorry to hear about the recurrence and that you continue to have problems.

My tumor was just over 1cm, no spread into the thyroid or lymph nodes. I'm 40. My tumor tested positive for BRAF, so my doctor said that I should have radioactive iodine 50 millicuries. Does the presence of BRAF mean that I'm not considered "low risk".

Sorry to hear that. I have hyperthyroidism and kinda freak out about this. I wanted to do the iodine but my wife thinks I should give more time taking medication. I really wish this would go away I feel horrible with this hyper thyroidism. I really hope there are other options to normalize the thyroid and not to destroy it. 33/male
