Here are some common risk factors

April 6, 2012 RSS Feed Print

(HealthDay News) -- An ingrown toenail occurs when a nail grows into the skin on the sides or top of a toe. This painful condition can lead to infection.

The American Podiatric Medical Association says risk factors for ingrown toenails include:

  • Trimming a toenail unevenly, rather than straight across.
  • Wearing shoes that are too tight or crowd the toes.
  • Having feet that are frequently subjected to injury during everyday activities.
