Teachers know this; it is the administration that don't seem to get it. Caring and nurturing are not the focus of administrators and legislators. All they care about are test scores and Union busting.

This is an extremely important issue, one that cannot be overemphasized and one that I refer to in my book, The Homework Trap: How to Keep the Sanity of Parents, Students and Teachers. Teachers are such important models to children that it pains me to see them give up that role with students who are persistently homework non-compliant. It is easy to be there for kids who excel and kids who comply. It’s much harder to do that for students who day after day don’t do what they’re supposed to do, their homework. And yet, those are the kids who are at greatest risk of going the wrong way. I’m not saying that teachers should not sustain high standards. I’m just saying that they risk squandering their influence by taking stands on behaviors that are out of their control. The teacher has control of the classroom environment. The teacher has no control of the home. Teachers should not allow themselves to get into negative relationships with students because of what those students do or don't do in a location outside of the school and outside of their control.
