The public needs to encourage the private sector to provide healthier options and then support these businesses with their patronage. Others will follow suit. The fact that this study showed that businesses that were not WIC vendors began providing more fruits and veggies proves that it is possible to affect positive changes - WIC Program Director - Martinsburg, W.V.

This is a great first step to getting some healthy options to people. Of course in addition to the lack of full service grocery stores these neighborhoods have few choices when it comes to the restaurants around them. mostly fast food chains with terrible food. The company I work for ThinDish is trying to make an impact here by listing low calorie options at a lot of chains to help raise awareness but there is so much work to be done in general. If chains thought that serving healthy food would be profitable in these communities the offerings would change,...raising awareness is a key component to this.
