And skip the chips and cookies

March 19, 2012 RSS Feed Print

(HealthDay News) -- Kids may crave chips and sweet treats, but parents should encourage their children to choose healthier options.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics offers these suggestions:

  • Keep plenty of fresh, colorful fruits and vegetables in plain sight, where kids can grab them easily.
  • Stock up on dried fruits (low-sugar options) and dried chickpeas, peas and soybeans.
  • Stock your pantry with applesauce, fruits and beans that can be mixed with salsa, and veggies.
  • Create home-made frozen fruit bars and smoothies.
