March 19, 2012 RSS Feed Print

(HealthDay News) -- If you can't sleep, you've got more options than lying in bed and counting sheep.

The U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute offers these suggestions to help manage insomnia:

  • Make lifestyle changes, including cutting out caffeine and setting a consistent sleep schedule.
  • Get cognitive behavioral therapy to learn relaxation techniques and help reduce sleep anxiety.
  • Talk to your doctor about prescription medication to help you sleep.
  • While there are a variety of over-the-counter sleep aids, you should discuss with your doctor before taking one.
