Among the many possible benefits of a daily omega-3 supplement are improved brain functions. The tissue of the brain is made up of over 60 percent fat. In humans, eating our natural diet, much of the structural fat in the brain is in the form of DHA, the most important omega-3 fat. The DHA level in the brain is normally five-fold higher than in the blood. We refer to the mood-raising, brain-boosting abilities of omega-3 fats as the omega effect.

When you supplement your diet with fish oil, especially one that is rich in DHA, you may notice a happier, more optimistic and focused outlook. The omega effect is often discernable to us in our own mental functioning, as well as in our family, friends, coworkers, and patients. Omega-3 fats also protect your brain against Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, as this very powerful study showing that consuming lots of Omega 3, especially DHA, keeps brain youthful and cognitively sharp, demonstrates. You should try to get DHA rich omega-3 into your diet, anywhere from 500mg-1000mg daily.
