stem cells treatment for wet macular degeneration

Maissa Aly Kamel 1:18PM January 21, 2012

my husband suffered a chemical burn that has left him blind with RCE and limbal cell test showed deficiency. My question and concern is, can a cornea transplant and limbal cell transplant help? I would imagine without the limbal cell the transplant would fail? Both his eyes are affected. Is is finally legal here in the US to do the cell transplant?

This is Mrs Amin From Egypt. My father judge Ahmed Amin is the vice minister of justice (chief of supreme court) in Egypt. He has been seeing a German Egyptian Doctor called ismail Hassouna from 15 years to follow up with his right and left eyes and their vision was perfect and he did not use reading glasses. From one year and half, he had left retinal vein thrombosis and the doctor used for him avastin injections as well as laser treatment. His vision with it now is 6/60.

On the 7th of October 2009, the doctor decided to make for him catarct surgery in the right eye under local anesthesia. It seemed that there were complications through the surgery and he claimed that the lens was hard like granite and the eye pressure went very high. On the 10th of October 2009, he occured to him another surgery under general anesthesia claim in to clean the rest of the lens remaining in the eye. On the 13th, he advised us to travel to England as he can not proceed with the case anymore. We travelled to London in the same day, my father has seen a lot of doctors in Moorfields who had all said there is no hope with the eye and they did not want to interfere with a surgery as it will may lead to eye shrunk. We returned to Egypt and a British Doctor called Dr. Sharma contacted us and he said that a surgery could be done to save the eye and may return a little vision. Then my father travelled to Belgium and Dr. Carl Claes performed a surgery to him that he said it was neccessary but not to return the vision. That is why, i m sending to you may be you or your center have something new to implement with my father eye (right or left) as he is now nearly without sight and it is impossible for him to complete his life as a judge who has given all his life to justice.

You will find attached all the reports of him starting from the report of Dr. hassouna about his surgery in Egypt until the latest ultrausound he has done on the 14th of December 2009.

You can contact me on this email or on phone number:0020115555234/ 0020101123451.

Thank you so much for your patience and best regards.

Mrs Amin.

Today from UPI:

"NEWCASTLE, England, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Cultured stem cells from eyes helped improve the sight of eight patients with Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency, a painful, blinding disease, British doctors said."

Eight HUMAN patients were actually helped with their own stem cells. They are still alive, can actually testify to what's happened to them. Their own stem cells were used--no transplant reject whatsoever. Quite a different scenario from mice who get dissected and can't utter a peep about " three months without MUCH sign of graft rejection."

Boy, where do I rush to get a subscription of this magazine? Want to stay right on top of all the really relevant news.
