The New Face of Pet Therapy

I think that, for the purpose of anxiety & stress relief, they should be permitted to be "service" animals. I adopted my dog from an animal shelter when she was 4 months old. She is, now, 2 years old. I am 37 years old. Prior to her, I was a dogsitter for my ex-girlfriend for a year, but I hadn't handled a dog since I was 5.

I take my dog with me, everywhere I go, when possible. Within the past year, 3 different people on separate occasions have told me that my companionship with the dog has "made me much less of a jerk". I play competitive pool, and I used to be somewhat of a vocally frustrated, sore loser. Secondly, now that I commute with the animal, I've noticed that road rage has virtually disappeared! Also, now that I have to consider her safety, and not just my own, I no longer drive excessive speeds. Admittedly, I'm a bit of an introvert. I'm a loner-type who keeps mostly to himself. The dog proves to be an excellent ice-breaker, improving my social skills.

My dog's name is Jackalin. I can honestly say, with no hesitation, that adopting her into my life is the best choice I've made in my entire existence. I cherish our companionship more than I ever would have imagined I could for an animal.

Show me where to sign....direct me to the proper authority.....but I need to have her certified as my service animal. She truly provides me the greatest service in an animal.

I am very glad to see an article on therapy dogs but I am very disappointed that this article does not mention the other three national groups which certify and do NOT charge facilities for their services. Delta also charges for mandatory lessons. I had looked into Delta but honestly, volunteering means no fee for a visit to me, and not making that facility use only your visiting group as Delta does.

This is a great article. I have a potbelly pig who is my "co-therapist" as I work with students on the autism spectrum. He is very motivating and has helped me reach goals in a fraction of the time as compared to traditional therapies.
