Can the mrsa be spread by touching doorknobs, computers etc.? If so, how can these area be cleaned, or sterilized?

i find that nursing students, unlike many nurses, are obsessed with cleaning their steths. in fact, you'll find that nursing students wash their hands more frequently than nurses. anyone who fails to do handwashing and stethoscope cleaning (especially before going home) is disgusting. why bring these germs back home?

According to Webster's online dictionary:

usage: Bacteria is regularly a plural in scientific and pedagogical use; in speech and in journalism it is also used as a singular, and it is sometimes pluralized as bacterias <caused by a bacteria borne by certain tiny ticks — Wall Street Journal> <more resistant to chlorine and elevated water temperatures than other bacterias — Allan Bruckheim, M.D., Chicago Tribune>. These journalistic uses are found in British as well as American sources.

Seems that journalists need to review the English language :-)

Actually, MRSA is a bacterium. I learned that in English 101.

MRSA is a bacteria .. not a virus . I learned this in Microbiology 101.

While the cost of stethescope and the number of times each is used on a patient and considering the risk described in this article, why not sterilize them and have them ready to go in a moments notice? Just remove (any scope) from a rugged Seal and Peel® pouch that has been gas sterilized. What many hospitals need to take a look at is EOGas® Sterilizers. A full load is the easiest, most economical and flexible option they can use to eliminate cross contamination between patients! See www.anpro.com.

"Doctor urges first responders to clean equipment regularly with alcohol wipes"

Ironically, I recall another study that showed doctors were among the worst for spreading infectious diseases due to lack of hand washing! Looks like everyone's guilty to some extent.

In addition to the virus/bacteria distinction that needs to be made, I would also like to point out that ALL health care personnel who use stethoscopes should be mindful of the spread of bacteria. We stress to our baccalaureate and direct entry nursing students the appropriateness and necessity of regular stethoscope cleaning with alcohol wipes - ideally, this should be taking place after every patient contact. Once per week cleaning of stethoscopes is definitely NOT best practice.
