Good for Dr. Steven Atlas! More can be read on this subject in "Her Doctor Prescribes Dancing at Daybreak; Lively Doctor-Patient Interactions" by Connie Thompson Titus (available online Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Borders, etc.) This book is timely material while legislators wrestle with health care reform. Seems like the doc-patient exchange will soon be converted to gov-patient mandate. Tate Publishing released Mrs. Titus' collection of personal letters written to her oncologist in Sept. 2008. Ten years of private, playful office visits becomes "rolling footage" of why community oncology is so important, especially NOW. Let us arm America with good reasons to protect opportunities for doctor-patient relationships.

My book, A Healthy Way to Be Sick, helps patients focus beyond anxious thoughts and connect to what I call the Wisdom of the Body. I have had MS for 28 yrs, I'm legally blind & in a wheelchair, but that forces me to a depth where I have to connect to my body's wisdom. We all have these resources, but don’t use them. A health crisis forces you to that depth because if you don't...your mind punishes you. My situation allows me to find quality that many healthy people ignore because their thinking demands their attention. In my seminars with the disabled & chronically ill, the Wisdom of the Body enables patients to become partners with doctors, using inner and outer resources together.
I am President of Life Skills Institute, a non profit that empowers patient participation. My Tele-seminars develop life skills needed to face serious challenges, such as a positive self image, self trust & a direct connection with the Wisdom of the Body. Imagine if people in a struggle could tap inner resources to deal with their challenges instead of anxious thinking. If the love in their own hearts comforted them instead of focusing on their problems, they would better face challenges. I have taught hundreds of people experiential techniques that change the way they interpret their situation. If powerful inner resources exist within everyone and they help make doctor's treatments more effective, why do we ignore them?

The doctor patient relatioship in many ways is no different than any other. If its good, the physician is more likely to listen and be attentive to the patient, and the patient is more likely to trust the physician and follow recommendations. It takes time, however, and communications, to build a healthy relatioship. The office visit is usually too short by itself, but on line services such as www.housedoc.us, that let doctors and patients communicate with each other by email, can help build a healthier relationship.
