Can naps of certain lengths pay back a constant sleep debt? If yes, how long in relation to the below average (but usual) amount of sleep each night? As a 24 hour per day, 365 day per year caregiver to my ninety year old mother, I literally get only four hours of sleep each night, and feel quite bad because of that. However, I could add naps of whatever required length(s) during the day, if helpful or necessary.

Even when my tasks would allow me to get a full seven or eight hours, I'm too conditioned to get any more than four... and sometimes less than that. I just can't get back to sleep. I do seem to be able to fall asleep for naps later in the day when I've tried.

As I write this, I realize I've left out one important side note. I'm quite overweight at 5' 8'' and over 300 lbs. Exercise, including just walking has been very difficult, also because of achiness and swelling from side effects of blood pressure and cholestorol medications. I do know that if I were advising myself I would point out how exercise greatly aids the ability to sleep properly. I've already experienced this for most of my non caregiving life. However, I'd still like to know the answer(s) to my questions about naps. Please advise, and thank you very much.

I have had sleeping problems since I was 17, and I am now 63. Never went away. There seems no definitive cure, although now that I am retired I can make time to take naps during the day occasionally to help relieve the haunting feeling of exhaustion. I can sympathise with those that have the same problem and have also tried innumerable solutions only to get partial or short term relief, or none at all. I have just learned to live with the problem. Hopefully some day there may be a cure.
