I had arthroscopic knee surgery on my right knee last july 2010

It never was right my knee kept buckling and popping and some time felt as if I was going to fall, so after the shots and cortizone shots

another MRI was done and I went back this past July13 2011 for arthroscopic surgery again. The Dr found more tears in my meniscu and a cartilage flap behind my knee and cleaned it all up also drilled 3 hole in the bone, for which I have no idea. the pain is terrible, throbbing pain and walking it is so much worse than last year. It has only been a week, but I am wondering if I should of done the surgery again. I am so tired of the pain....

in order to be thorough in your presentation(and make at least pretense of being up to date), should not there be some reference to re-generative approaches to knee/joint disorders?

For a meniscal tear, you can keep getting DepoMedrol injections. These last about a month, and you might find this effective on a short term basis. It also depends on the extent of the tear. When the tear is severe, the damaged part of the meniscus can fold over into the joint and if that happens (trust me, it is very painful!) you NEED to have arthroscopic surgery. If you elect surgery, you need to go to a knee specialist, not an orthopedic generalist. I had this procedure 4 weeks ago and was walking 10 minutes after the procedure with only minor discomfort. At this point I am back to work (my profession involves standing for extended periods of time) and am only experiencing minimal discomfort towards the end of my shift.

As soon as the weather improves, I anticipate once again biking an average of 20 miles daily.

I AM A POLICE OFFICER AND I FELL OFF A BIKE WHILE ON BIKE PATROL. THE MRI DETERMINED THAT I MIGHT A TEAR ON MY KNEE. THE KNEE SPECIALIST TOLD ME THAT I ONLY HAVE 2 OPTIONS: 1) ARTHOSCOPIC SURGERY, 2) LEAVE IT ALONE. HE DOES NOT GUARANTEE THAT AFTER SURGERY MY KNEE WILL BE "NORMAL" AND THAT I WILL BE ABLE TO COME BACK TO ALL OF MY SPORTS ACTIVITIES! MANY OF MY FRIENDS TELL ME NOT TO DO THE SURGERY SINCE IT DOES NOT GURANTEE ANYTHING! THERE ARE MANY OTHER OFFICERS THAT HAVE THE SAME INJURIES AND TELL ME TO WORK MY KNEE OUT, BUT I AM AFRAID TO WORK OUT AND WORSEN MY KNEE! I DONT' KNOW WHAT TO DO! I AM ON LIGHT DUTY AND CANNOT BE REALSED TO WORK UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. PLEASE SUBMIT COMMENTS! I NEED ADVICE!

Knee problems are genetic in my family so I have not done too much medically to correct the problem. I took NSAIDs for years but worry about gastric bleeding. I worked for a well known knee surgeon for years, and frankly saw no difference between those who had surgery to alleviate pain or did physical therapy, took meds or did nothing.

I do aquajogging at a local rec center and this has done the most to alleviate my pain, as well as a Cortisone injection I received a couple of weeks ago.

I normally walk my dogs for a mile or so daily, but it became problematic with my knee problems. I have now lost 11 pounds, and am working on losing more weight so I can alleviate as much stress as I can on my knees.

Just as a warning, I took Glucosamine/Chondroitin for a couple of years and it did work for me. But it also (for me) caused severe heartburn, burping and other gastrointestinal problems. I was taking Prilosec twice daily not inowing what was causing the problem. I discovered it was the supplements when I tried Glucosamine/Chondroitin with Hyaluronic acid and almost ended up in the emergency room. for anyone with sensitive stomachs, be very careful. I also tried Joint Juice thinking that might be more easily digested, but I had the same problems.

Good luck to everyone. Do what works best for you, and don't assume "natural" supplements won't cause problems.
