Absinthe is right that Ukraine situation is worrisome. There is early anecdotal evidence that vitamin D may be protective against swine flu. Certainly vitamin D's role in immunoregulation is well documented. There are two physicians who describe the protective effect they have seen from vitamin D repletion. You can read on it here,

People are freaking out about this swine flu thing. But the more we learn about it, the more it turns out that 1) this is nothing new, 2) it's no more contagious than regular seasonal flu, 3) it's no more dangerous than regular seasonal flu, and 4) the symptoms are so similar between swine flu and regular seasonal flu that the CDC is now admitting the number of cases is greatly exaggerated because the two illnesses have been confused in many cases.

Actually, I am concerned about protecting my cat and not being protected from her. How do I make sure I don't make my kitty sick?

the cat in question who had the swine flu, is 13 years old (at which age they are considered a senior cat).

despite being very sick, the cat recovered. If a senior cat can recover from H1N1, I don't think we need to panic as much as we have been

I have a background in epidemiology, and was alarmed by the recent reports out of the Ukraine about a breakout of "hemorrhagic pneumonia". This is the kind of secondary bacterial infection that killed so many people in 1918. If the H1N1 virus has mutated in the Ukraine to make the complication of hemorrhagic pneumonia much more likely than it was before now, this is a situation well worth watching.

It's been given almost no press. Instead, when I check Google health news, I find it flooded about the stories of a cat that caught H1N1.

Big whoop. This is what passes for health news in America? Pathetic.
