Breast-Feeding Boost: Fewer Hospitals Handing Out Free Formula

I agree with Betsy. The problem isn't the formula. It's important that formula be available for mothers who are unable to breastfeed for a variety of reasons. The real problem is the mixed message from society. Mothers are pressured to breastfeed just as long as they do it where no one can see them. Perhaps the campaign should focus more one educating people on accepting breastfeeding in public. No one takes a second glance at a mom feeding her baby formula in the park. Breastfeeding in the park though...there are people who are less disgusted by a man peeing in a bush than seeing a woman breastfeed. I would venture to guess that higher rates of breastfeeding exist in societies where breastfeeding in public is more common.

If breastfeeding practice is in decline it is not because they are giving out formula and coupons at the hospital! GET REAL!

It's because breastfeeding is a major commitment on the part of mom, it's because society still hasn't made it easy for moms -- working or otherwise -- to breastfeed or pump, it's because breastfed babies need to be fed so incredibly often, it's because dads can't breastfeed so it's all on the moms, and it's because breastfeeding can be so painful in the beginning that moms need to really tough it through. In short, breastfeeding is a challenge.

I breastfed two babies exclusively for six months each and can tell you that formula is not the devil! For a sleep-deprived mom, it can be a lifesaver. Stop making moms feel guilty and let them make their own choices.
