My son is in 2nd grade, they get 15 minutes of recess every day. Only 15 MINUTES. The students have to be in the lunch room at the same time as the recess ends which leaves no transition time. I have my son enrolled in Baseball and we have a pool he swims in, we belong to the YMCA so we keep him active, but that isn't my main concern. My concern is that Teachers force the kids to SIT in their seat for SUCH a long time, with no breaks, unlike High school students who get 5-7 between classes to walk, Elementary students don't. The kids get in trouble for talking in class, etc. They obviously have energy during the time they are there in the classroom, and are forced to sit in their seat and learn when they have all this energy. They miss recess if they misbehave, which the reason they misbehave is because they are fraught with energy and need to get it out! I can't sit there for such a long period of time!

School days are short, but getting kids moving is a critical part of healthy childhood development. So, how do you find time for health and wellness in schools short on time and resources? Teach nutrition and exercise through the curriculum. Come up with creative ways (or use material from others) to teach reading, writing, science, history on food and exercise.

See you outside,

Is there anything that parents are willing to take responsible for anymore? How about signing your child up for a sport or activity? How about encouraging them to go outside and play? How about going out and throwing a ball with your kids or taking them to the playground? Geez - come on!!

Parents are probably right that their children need more daily exercise. I regret the shortening of school recess and removal of physical education where it has occurred, but understand the schools' dilemma when legislatures mandate teaching x subjects every day and reaching y scores on standardized tests. There is, however, no mandate requiring children to ride to school in a bus or SUV. Children who walk to school, or ride a bike there, arrive in class with minds invigorated by the exercise and bodies toned enough to sit through lessons without squirming. Even where magnet programs and cross-town zoning put children in schools far from home, the exercise could be gotten by walking to clustered bus stops rather than being picked up at the one nearest home. Parents may have to walk with the younger children -- but most of us need the exercise, too, don't we?

Public schools have become the "New Boarding Schools". The only things we are not asked to do is to feed dinner and keep students overnight.

At present, most public schools give breakfast and lunch, teach health and social skills, and provide medical and psychological care. That leaves less time and resources for teaching academic skills and a full curriculum of "big ideas". We need more time, you say, which states are going to add rather than subtract money for the schools?

Why not let teachers and schools do what they were created to do? Home caregivers should do the same. Children do need exercise and parents certainly should see to it that they receive an opportunity to run and play and laugh and compete and participate in active games on neighborhood playgrounds. Too dangerous?....not enough time?....that is a political problem, not an educational one.

Seriously??!! We are the parents here!! We should do the job of feeding our kids right and having them stay fit. Our schools are behind academically as is...let them do their job to educate so our kids can have a fighting chance against the rest of the world. There's plenty of time for phyiscal activities after school, weekends,...
