Great Article. In addition, the importance of taking a good quality probiotic everyday along with adding digestive enzyme capsules before meals should be an integral part of great digestion. Without adequate stomach lining protection and bringing back the good bacteria you may have lost after taking antibiotics, probiotics will ensure the correct type of good bacteria will do its function for immune support and absorbing the nutrients from your foods. Taking the enzyme caps before meals also helps to digest the sugars, carbs and proteins and fats that our food sources cannot do alone. This is because the purity and quality of our foods and the nutrients they provide have diminished greatly due to poor farming soils that are sprayed with pesticides, fruits and veggies being pulled before fully ripe, etc.

i have severe gastroparesis from diabetic nerve damage, slow stomach emptying--others have idiopathic which means cause unknown--Reglan caused nerve damage to my face, tear ducts and hands...i was then put on Domperidone 10mg when in Europe, which helps the emptying with NO side effects, it also stops the reflux and heartburn from ever happening; and i used to burp like a fog horn. i believe it is now available in the USA, and i would recommend it over heartburn meds such as prilosec which was no help at all for me.

one of the things which makes me very angry is the price gouging that goes on here in the USA. My birth control pill costs $60 a month here, yet the same drug, made by the same company at its Irish lab is $4. Insulin here is $127 and as little as $14 in the Caribbean ... my husband's asthma inhaler is $3 in Greece and $98 in America. not fare, plain disgusting in fact...

There are alternative and homeopathic doctors that deal with natural treatments and cures that should be able to help you.

Good Luck and don't give up! There is always hope if you have Faith.

I have a hiatal hernia and have been taking prescription acid inhibitors for years, first Ranitidine, then a PPI. when I read about some of the dangers of PPI's, I told my doctor I wanted to go off it. She was not happy and said I run the risk of getting esophageal cancer. I then said I would be willing to take Ranitidine and she agreed to give me a prescription for it. I really would prefer to go with no drug at all, but don't know if I should in view of the hernia, even though I do not have a problem with reflux anymore.

I have been on Prevacid for more than 2 years and then I read about Apple Cider Vinegar. For more than a year I am taking 1 teaspoon of Apple Cider Vinegar diluted in 8 ounces of water (with honey if you like) 3 times daily. The improvement was amazing. These days I take Prevacid only when I cannot carry the Vinegar with me!

I have both of the above conditions, am not overweight and don't eat any of the heartburn-triggering foods. So if I stop ppi's I'm faced with esophageal cancer and if I keep taking them when I already have thinning bones Im looking at fractures. What to do...........

We in the natural health industry have been preaching for years now that proton pump inhibitors are dangerous used long term, yet almost every person put on them remains on them for years! It is about time this is brought to light. Hurry!!!

Maybe now more people will be open to the real truth about heartburn and GERD. That it is more likely you have too little stomach acid than too much. Most doctors never check, just put you on the PPI. There should be more doctors using the Heidelberg pH diagnostic system to see if there really is too much acid or too little before prescribing.

The issue of reliance on drugs with serious side effects to treat something that may not be a ture problem has been disturbing to me for a decade or more. The problems with the drugs are serious and can lead to problems with liver detoxification function and in some cases to stomach cancer.

Water is an excellent remedy, but it should be fluoride and chlorine free. You should also test to be sure you have adequate stomach acid and most doctors can do this test. Water, celtic salt and cayennne help stimulate acid with meals, digestive enzymes are very beneficial and can do a better and safer job.

. . . when I have indigestion, which isn't often any more.

Indian restaurants have seeds that you can help yourself to after a meal, only two of which my partner and I have been able to identify: coriander and anise. They calm you all the way down, and you feel as though you never ate all that curry.

I started drinking Crazy Water, an all natural mineral water from Texas and it has stopped my acid reflux. It has a natural high pH and natural bicarbonates. I also stopped drinking purified water. My trainer pointed out to me that RO water is acidic and was potentially adding to my reflux problem.
