My husband recently started seeing a VA physician. He has been prescribed one drug after the other on top of the multitude of meds he has been on over the years. They are claiming this as their protocol. He has been under the expert care of his cardiologist for many years but in seeing a VA physician the cost of his medications is greatly reduced. However I feel he is now at risk for the many drug interactions he could incur from this frivilous use of medications.

If doctors would focus on and treat the ROOT CAUSE of their patients problems, not just the symptoms to provide a temporary "band-aid", we would all be much better off.

Unfortunately this misconception has been perpetuated and passed down to the patient, who honestly believes he/she can just take a pill to fix all the problems in their life.

This trend needs to be reversed.

Just because on MD writes a script, doesn't obligate you to take it. If you're getting cholesterol drugs, seek a dietician instead.

What the FDA doesn't want the average *consumer* to understand, is that FOOD - REAL food - not the garbage in brightly colored boxes in the center aisles of stores, is the BEST medicine.

Granted, a lot of those 'consumers' have bad habits and are just plain-out lazy and would rather pop pills mindlessly, but a lot are looking for a way off the chemical treadmill, that seems designed not so much as to benefit the user, but to keep him broke and living in penury for the benefit of the drug companies and their shill MD salesmen.

Make the FIRST thing you say to your MD be "If you are planning on being the drug company vend-o-mat instead of helping me get to the CAUSE of this problem and stopping it, you do NOT get paid for this visit today."

Believe me, that will catch their attention.

I havent counted the number of prescribed drugs my doctor has told me to take but 15-20 sound rightr. I have no other choice other then to follow his advise. He is know in the community as the "pill doctor". Long as medicare and or tri-care pay the majority of the cost, I aint going to worry about it. Last time i went to the dr office and told him I worried a lot, he prescribed some more pills.

The hospital/doctor ordered Haldol to be given to my 90 year old step father who had been taken to the hospital with just bad constipation/impacted stool.

He tied to the bed, and given Mega doses of Haldol. And basically weakened, left to die in a death spiral. He had only mild to mid Alzheimers but was till very functional before he came to the hospital.

His own doctor was the one who ordered up the mega doses of Haldol.

He was basically left to die. He had been on iv fluids but when his tray of food came to his bed, he was not fed by hospital employees. He was basically unconscious...virtually coma induced by too much Haldol being injected into his arm every 6 hours. He soon became quite frail and incoherent. When the haldol was waning..he would wake up and have moments of clarity.

Haldol is an anti psychotic. They had no business giving it to a frail 90 year old man, no less giving him mega doses of it, and tying him to a bed like a dog.

He died soon after. This was a death induced from poor decisions on his doctors behalf as well as the hospital.

My plea to the public is to please watch your elderly parents closely when they are admitted to the hospital. Especially those over 80 years old. Hospitals and doctors are notorious for mismanagement of geriatric patients.

And beware of the drugs they are giving them?? Drugs on the elderly need to be particularly scrutinized due to their advanced age and frail physical stature.

I am an average 42 year old American, and I ended up with 2 doctors. A family doctor who currently has been helping with my general health and a severe back problem! I currently take (from my family doctor) a drug for hyper-tension, a drug for Chloresterol, an aspirin a day, and 2 types of pain relievers.

My other Doctor is a neurologist who has been treating me for 2 mild strokes and a type of unspecific seizure disorder. This has added 2 different types of seizure medications, a stress medication and this all gives me a grand total of 10 pills twice a day! (Not to mention the vitamins that I normally take on a daily basis!)

So on average, I would say that many Americans are definetly over medicated!

I have reduced the strength of medications that have been prescribed due to their effects on my body and my mind, (much to the concernation of my doctors)!

But it is my general opinion that instead of actually treating the problem, and find out what causes the malady in the first place, Doctors are trying to treat the symptoms of the illness!! And this is the Whole problem with modern medicine today.

Once the Established Medical Society figures out what is the best way to treat people, Diseases WILL become a thing of the past!!
