From the article it clearly appears that fight against breast cancer cannot be won. Only risk can be reduced and period of growth of tumor can be controlled. Research has yet to find answer for overcoming it.

Despite the breast cancer awareness month for October, there is not enough evidence to know what causes breast cancer. The simple way to prevent or to heal breast cancer is to change your life style by eating healthy foods, exercising, and reducing stress.

Don't be duped. The Susan G. Komen foundation's vast wealth never makes it to women (or men) that are fighting breast cancer and need help: medical bills, transporation, wigs, income replacement. In fact, there's no organization to help those that are battling cancer. Enough with "Awareness." We all know about breast cancer. How about prevention? Banning hormone replacement therapy would be the first step. Everyday chemicals have been identified as carcinogenic. But the Komen Foundation and every other organization treats that with hands-off. Their corporate sponsors wouldn't like it. It's disgusting the amount of money being made off women's misery.

Most insurance companies will not pay for a simple Breast Cancer Gene test, because its not as profitable as treating breast cancer victims. I am one of those high risk women. The women X-Ray technician told me a mammogram was almost useless because my breasts were too dense. She said, I should be offered a Breast ultrasound or scan/mri. My mothers onocologist recommended her daughters to have this test and they could compare the results. But our insurance companies wouldnt pay for it. The Onocologist said, studies are now showing that the daughters of Breast Cancer Victims, are more likely to get the disease 10-15 years earlier. This is a womens disease and it doesnt affect men. If it was a mans disease, how long did it take researchers to come up with Viagara?

Wake up ladies - taking hormones every day of your life for 15-20 years is a no brainer - even the drug companies who produce these pills are required to put the warning in the little pamphlet folded up in your pill packs. Have you ever read it? I finally did the day I was diagnosed with breast cancer and the doctor told me to stop taking the "pill". When I asked why she said, Because they can cause breast cancer". Sure, not every person who smokes will get lung cancer, but ask a woman with hormone positive breast cancer if she took oral contraceptives or fertility treatments and I bet you get a freakishly high percentage! When is the FDA going to be more responsible and say enough is enough? Maybe the FDA does have or have somebody they love with breast cancer.

I take issue with the "excuse" that 110+ deaths/day does not take into account the population increase. It is not the percentage of deaths by population that is the real test ... it is the percentage of deaths per the number diagnosed that shows whether or not progress is being made. The number of people being diagnosed today and dying today are the same as they were ten years ago, which means the breast cancer patients odds of survival today are no better than they were 10 years ago. To those of us living and dying of the disease, this is NOT progress. The facts: Diagnoses in 2000 and 2001 were 184,200 and 193,700 respectively. In 2008 and 2009 they were 184,450 and 194,280 respectively. Meanwhile, deaths have consistently averaged 41,000 per year. NOTE: The men are excluded in the 40,000 count.

I think it's easy to get bogged down with all of the negativity and the fact that the cure isn't coming easy. However, I think you are writing with a biased hand and trying to make it sound like we should just all give up. "Illogical but attention-grabbing" campaign on facebook? Are you kidding me? What is illogical about women banding together to fight cancer with a little humor and grace? Sounds like you need to find a Save Second Base T-shirt and jump on the wagon.

"And microbiologist Dr. Gerard Nadal, who has a PhD in Molecular Microbiology from St John's University in New York, has spent 16 years teaching science, most recently at Manhattan College, has been profiling more than 100 studies on his blog showing abortion's link to breast cancer."

Excellent overview, Deborah.

I'd recommend Dr. Samantha King's book "Pink Ribbon Inc: Breast Cancer and the Politics of Philanthropy' for an eye-opening look at the pervasive corporate branding opportunity that the pink ribbon affords.

Corporations love breast cancer because breast cancer is "safe", carrying none of what marketers euphemistically call the "lifestyle issues" of serious diseases like AIDS or lung cancer or even heart disease (which kills six times more women than breast cancer does each year) - because those diseases are arguably perceived to be self-inflicted.
