Perhaps that need to do something to sidestep disease—or cure whatever ails us—draws us to take supplements before we know if they'll really live up to their promises. Full disclosure: I started taking vitamin D supplements after writing an article on how almost everyone needs more of the sunshine vitamin and took fish oil for a time after helping best-selling author Barry Sears write about its benefits in the Anti-Inflammation Zone. Was I too quick to jump on the bandwagon? Only time and future research findings will tell. Still, I'm not as certain as I used to be about the promise of these supplements. For now, I think I'll try to get more foods that naturally contain the nutrients I need rather than looking for them in fortified cookies.
