With last week's approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration of Botox for treating chronic migraines, the list of conditions for which injections of botulinum toxin are officially acceptable has reached seven. It's also used to treat:
- Upper-limb spasticity
- Cervical dystonia—involuntary muscle contractions in the neck that cause the head to lean forward, back, or to the side
- Blepharospasm—eyelid spasm
- Strabismus—crossed eyes
- Axillary hyperhidrosis—severe underarm sweating (when topical medications are ineffective)
- Frown lines between the eyebrows (as a temporary cosmetic treatment)
