The Multimodal Treatment of ADHD Children or 'MTA' was the longest study performed on the use of medication in a typical family situations. It was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health. It spanned over 3 years. What was found? That most children who took medication over those 3 years showed no significant differences academically, socially, or behaviorally than children who DID NOTHING at all.

However, children on medication had overall lower weight and height than their peers indicating stunted growth.

Meds teach nothing and do have side effects. It's important to realize many programs are available to work on cognitive and behavioral issues. In the UK, it is common practice to employ these methods prior to using meds. Check out behavioral and cognitive programs like www.adhdnanny.com or www.playattention.com to work in conjunction with or without meds.
