With so many calcium supplements available, each brand making claims of it's value, and contradictory information about the various sources calcium supplements are made from, it makes more sense to eat foods that have naturally occurring calcium content, incorporated into a balanced diet plan. So, I'm very happy to find this information, as well as similar info on other webpages...helping me to determine how best to get calcium I KNOW is body-friendly and will get maximum benefit, especially for bone health.

Quite frankly, considering this line: "(The government recommends 15 micrograms of vitamin D per day.)", I could not care less what the government says about the food I should eat. Why does this site always seem to focus on what the government says? I don't know about the rest of the people in this country, but I've come to the conclusion that government has been the vehicle for the most destruction throughout the entire history of the world, and I don't see that changing...EVER.

Listen to people who actually know their stuff, nutritionists and the like, people who don't have anyone's agenda to accomplish and lies to sell.

Healthy eating really isn't hard, especially considering the insanely massive variety of foods and nutrition we have available to us today. We live in a free country, free to chose the best life possible, yet we have so many unhealthy people, who don't have a fricken clue. And I have to say, it's not helping that people are encouraging blind reliance on government. GET OUT OF OUR WAY GOVERNMENT. We can handle this. Thank you very much.

Digesting dairy actually leeches calcium from your bones. These 5 are better than dairy.

I can't believe how many DIETICIANS on here are advocating the HEALTH of dairy products! It has been established that countries that consume NO dairy have virtually NO osteoporosis so WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT, ASHLEY ROSALES? Are you paid a salary by the Dairy Association? You shouldn't be practicing because your advice is RIDICULOUS! Plant sources of calcium are much healthier for you and don't have any of the ill effects of saturated fat. Not to mention that we are the only species that consumes milk past the age of weaning AND ingests the milk of other species. Don't you know further, Ms. Rosales, that cow's milk is linked to asthma and juvenile diabetes??? My Lord. Ms. Messina of WA has the right advice: best sources of calcium for vegans are collards, kale, etc. AND supplementation of calcium is now under scrutiny for CAUSING brittle bones! A lot of the people leaving comments here need to get up to date!

Excuse me, but where does your information come from? First of all, the new recommendation from doctors who are the slightest bit progressive is that 750 mg per day of calcium FROM ALL SOURCES is ideal! And vegetable sources of calcium are more efficiently absorbed than dairy!! Yes, spinach has lots of calcium AND iron, but both are bound in an oxalic acid compound that makes them unavailable, but what about kale? Collards? Bok choy? Nappa cabbage? Broccoli rabe? All these greens have TONS of calcium in them! A two-cup serving of kale or collards has several hundred mgs! And it doesn't make your blood acidic like dairy products do which in the long run causes the body to USE calcium to adjust its pH balance. And who can eat an entire CUP of nuts in a day? Although it's a healthy fat, it's still FAT! Two teaspoons of nuts is 16 grams of fat, so one cup would well over a hundred grams of fat! I'm sorry, but you don't know what you're talking about.

what???

i thought it was just the opposite... dairy (animal protein) interferes with our ability to absorb calcium in dairy products and leaches out the calcium from our bones, etc ... while plant sources of calcium are more readily accessible to our bodies.

isn't this what some of The China Study was about??

now... you're saying this is NOT so?

My family are all very happy with Blue Diamond Unsweetened original almond milk. I can't tell you how it makes me feel to come home and see my 17 year old sneaking a drink out of the carton! (just like any all American teen....but with almond milk! Brilliant!)
