Research continues to suggest they promote weight loss—and protect against diabetes, heart disease, and other health conditions. Though there's no solid definition for "plant-based," these plans typically emphasize minimally processed foods from plants, and are built around healthy protein like nuts, seeds, beans, and tofu. Julieanna Hever is a registered dietitian who has been in private practice in Los Angeles since 2005, specializing in weight management, disease prevention and management, and sports nutrition. Hever is the host of the talk show series What Would Julieanna Do? on Veria Living Network, author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Plant-Based Nutrition, and the nutrition columnist for VegNews magazine.
