Odds are these statistics are statistically not worth taking in to serious account in any way, shape, or form for many obvious reasons.

For example, they didn't say how many teens were polled, where they lived, religious beliefs, etc.

So I call this article pretty much worthless crap.

The girls are just more likely to lie. All of your figures should be higher.

i'm glad that people have come to their senses about this.

So what was the study. Can you please provide access to it? Right now, reader's are operating on the basis of trust in the journalistic integrity of the article. Not providing the study, promotes doubt and criticism. It would also be helpful for people interested in the article who would like to do further research. So any mention, or link to the study, or who conducted the study, would be greatly appreciated. I wouldn't want a valuable article to be unjustly criticized because the author did not provide sources.

Why is this tagged with abortion...?

L of CA 5:39PM March 27, 2012

Can someone explain to me why "abortion" is considered an appropriate tag for this article? It isn't mentioned once anywhere in this article. Seriously, what the hell is wrong for with people?

"...for both boys and girls...masturbation was associated with a greater odds of engaging in sexual relations with a partner, compared to adolescents who did not masturbate...higher odds of engaging in oral sex and vaginal intercourse...oral sex, partnered masturbation, and both vaginal and anal intercourse."

Doesn't this correlation strongly suggest that self control is enhanced by refraining from masturbation, while lack of self control increases risky sexual behaviors? Instead, it seems that the conclusion is simply making masturbation more socially acceptable as the leaning in the article, despite the correlation of lower rates of masturbation with greater sexual restraint in later life. This leaning seems to echo the dominant arguments that safe sex should be made more socially acceptable simply because promoting abstinence seems unrealistic.

I would like access to the original study especially the way that the question was asked. I think that it is possible that the data on girls could be wrong. Female sexuality is much more complicated than male sexuality one could say. And while there is likely confusion on what exactly is comprised in the definition of masturbation for women. Do the teens surveyed have in mind have the medical/legal definition in mind? I doubt it.

The correlation between masturbation and sexual activity may be called into question as well. If an individual is sexually active with another person it is likely that they are talking about sexual activities with their partner and/or their friends. Masturbation is generally a very private thing and individuals who are not discussing their sexuality in other settings may be more hesitant to reveal that information to someone for the first time in such an impersonal setting.
