Health Tip: Prepare to Bring Baby Home

What you need for the trip from the hospital

(HealthDay News) -- Most babies are ready to leave the hospital within two to five days of birth. For parents, that means a lot of preparation.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says parents should follow this checklist before bringing baby home:

  • Properly install a rear-facing car seat that is federally approved and the correct size for your little one.
  • Be sure to follow the car seat maker's instructions carefully. If possible, have the installed seat inspected by a certified technician.
  • Select a safe place for the infant to sleep, well in advance.
  • Purchase clothing and blankets, diapers, and formula -- if you decide not to breast-feed.
