why is it that people become obese and dont try to do anything about it? its a shame how they can accept their self being over weighted.

Everyones risk is the same 2-4% that's what we were told. I have none of the above problems, I am healthy and have had zero complications with my pregnancy. My blood pressure is outstanding, my glucose is great, I eat a very healthy diet I exercise and BOTH my husband and I were taking more than the recommended dose of folic acid and pregnancy vitamins for 3 months before getting pregnant and all during pregnancy. Still, our son has Spina Bifida. To date there is NO FOR SURE evidence that this defect has anything to do with the parents and what they "should have done differently".

Have some compassion people, 2-4% means EVERYONE healthy and less than healthy alike.

Some of you folks sound really angry. Life happens. I've been athletic all my life, but thyroid cancer and a couple of kids later--I'm overweight. Now it's time to work hard. My family has a history of being overweight, diabetes, heart disease and everything that goes along with ranching families that don't ranch anymore. I'm 33 and I'm ready to work. But reading how hateful some of you are about obese people is really disheartening. Even those of you who used to be heavy are so negative about people in your old boat. Hope you don't suffer a relapse, it might affect your pride.

Have a nice day, and back to the message in the article. If you want to have healthier children, try some good walking and some good eating and seek positive people who will help you reach your goal. I read this article because I am overweight and plan to have another child. I have healthy, strong, lean children already. We are really active--I want to do the best for my next baby that I can.

Say something nice.

Well hell, maybe ugly people should be outlawed from having children, too! Or how about people that carry genetic markers for certain defects or diseases such as Downs Syndrome or Asthma. Personally, I think if you are on public assistance you should not be allowed to have children that society will have to pay to raise.

Get off your high horses! And to whoever found evidence that drugs and alcohol are "safer" than obesity - where did you find that tidbit? My Ob Gyn and every book I've read would conflict with your ridiculous statement!

Serious birth defects are the leading cause of infant death. I think most moms would want this to not happen to their child and would take preventive measures. If losing weight could save a lifetime of heartache and medical costs for both child and family, women need to know this. It's all about making informed choices. If you're not informed, you can't choose.

I'm really amazed at the prejudice that is pouring out from this subject. I am not overweight, but I don't like reading about geneticists, nutritionists,or psychologists telling a group of people how to live their life, calling them fat, lazy, and ridiculing them, that is bigotry and if it was any other group of people, you would be sued at the very least.Maybe we should mind our own business and quit using"our taxpaying dollars" as a excuse to persecute a group of people.

I think the only choice we have is to involve the federal government, because they are there to help us. We must petition the federal government to outlaw obese mothers. On the other hand, most women can have children, so perhaps we should simply outlaw obese women altogether... Problem solved.

Come on insurance industry! Get your act together! Round up your best lobbyists and get to work on this serious issue which affects everyone!

You people make everything so hard when all we really need are more laws to tell us exactly how to live.

I thank god for those in positions of power, they can think for themselves... and for me too! How wonderful!

Save us from ourselves o mighty and wise lawgivers. Save us from fat women too. Oh, and could you please do something about all this liberty...its dangerous.
