My oldest was born in 1991 and they recommended he be put to sleep on his belly, then my 2nd son was born in 2005 and they reccomended that i put him to sleep on his back or side, my 3rd was born in 2009 and they rec. i put him to sleep only on his back...wth...figure it out! I have 4 children now and I put them all to sleep however they seemed most comfy....back, tummy, side...whatever. I don't think anybody knows the best way to avoid SIDS.

all a baby needs to sleep is a fitted cotton sheet on his bed and weather appropriate clothing like a sleep sack, on their back. that is it!

Amazing how little intuition some parents have ... to be influenced by an advertisement about pools or furniture and determine that scene would be safe for your own baby ... they're not child safety ads ... seriously ... so unbelievable to place blame on anyone or anything for their own stupidity.

It would also help if the backyard swimming pool industry would stop showing landscape designs in ads in which the swimming pool is unfenced and accessible from the back patio door of the house. Studies show that this is a typical drowning scenario--a toddler exits the back door while a parent or caregiver is momentarily distracted and and drowns before anyone realizes the child is missing. All swimming pool ad pictures should show an isolation fence separating the pool from the house and the surrounding yard area.

My first newborn almost died sleeping on her back because she spit up. If my neighbor had not checked on her when she did my baby would not have lived to be 39 years old today.

I was always told as a kid that you don't put babies on their backs because if they spit up in their sleep or drool excessively they could "drown" in the fluid, whereas putting them on stomach or side allows the mouth and throat to drain so that they won't suffocate. So are we now ignoring this advice because babies don't spit up in their sleep, or will a baby who throws up actually be able to turn his or her head to clear their throat... or do babies just not throw up in their sleep at all? (I've never had kids, and don't plan on it, but I work with them and would really like to know that I'm properly educated on these things!)

Honestly, I would suggest that a big source of confusion is the agencies which change their stance at every little finding. Some parents actually talk to their kids about child care and homemaking, and then you grow up to be a parent yourself and suddenly all the literature is telling you the opposite of what your mom did. It's no wonder some parents prefer to remain uneducated!

I too am a parent who raised two children per the wisdom of the day and I had no problems till the teen years and even survived those . It is true that people all over the world co sleep with their babies but children all over the world die of SIDS. I am a nurse who has for over a decade been giving the advice for Back To Sleep etc. Babies have not died from being placed on their backs but we know the precautions have greatly reduced the number of heart breaking stories. We knew this many years ago it is not new.

I watched two friends face this horrible situation while my babies were little.

What came out in the news today is what I had been teaching along with my coworkers as the highly suspected cause and there is no way yet to say which babies have the brain chem. problem. We know some factors that put babies at higher risk but that does not cover all. So please do not think this is over the top thinking . A 50% drop in SIDS is remarkable. Till we know more do what you can.

I raised two children sleeping face down, as recommended by doctors of the time. I wonder if all these new recommendations is a bit over the top. In most parts of the world where there is no heating in cold climate, parents always sleep with their babies, the only way to keep babies warm and to survive. So what is the next new and newer recommendation, alarm clocks and bright lights?
