Finding the right sex therapist can be almost as challenging as finding the right partner: Chemistry matters. You deserve thorough responses to questions like "What is your training in sex therapy?" and "How much experience do you have handling sexual issues with clients?" If the therapist dodges or gets defensive, keep looking. Also, a professional should be engaged, says Polonsky, not the robotlike stereotype who drones, "How does that make you feel?"

"You need someone who is real and can be direct," he says. "A benevolent, encouraging, guiding coach."
